An Interview with Stephen Hui, 105 Hikes In and Around Southwestern British Columbia May 7, 2018 • Guidebook • by Ashika Parsad
It’s that time of year again, when we choose the most perfect moments and reflect on them, hold on to them, to validate to ourselves that they were something special. We choose these memories because they are the way things should have been, would have been, had it not been for, well, life. In these snapshots, the moments are unwarped and golden. The views and sensations are in fine detail: wildflowers dancing in the breeze, rainfall streaming down my face, legs overrun by a burning sensation from pushing…
Trip Date: November 6, 2016 With the record-breaking rain we’ve had to date this season, it was a no-brainer to find some waterfalls to chase a few Sundays ago. We recently hiked to Kennedy Falls and Cypress Falls in the North Shore, and I’ve spent some time exploring various cascades on Burke Mountain, including Sawblade Falls. After some plan-devising, we decided to hike the Sigurd Creek Trail to Crooked Falls, located in Squamish, BC.
Trip Date: October 2, 2016 I was scrolling online, as one does on a Thursday night in attempt to make weekend plans and get a sense of trail conditions paired with inspiration so they might get out somewhere during the upcoming weekend to take a break from the midweek grind, when there it was, a report of a hike to Blanca Lake. The area was new to us, it looked stunning in pictures, so Ryan & I went for it on the following Sunday. Blanca Lake is located…
Trip Date: August Long Weekend 2016 As August long weekend rolled in, we rolled out to Lake Lovely Water to spend a few days at the Alpine Club of Canada Tantalus Hut. The Tantalus Provincial Park is unlike anything I’ve traveled to before. The stunning Lake Lovely Water is circled by peaks screaming to be scrambled or climbed; if you’re not used to technical travel (beyond hiking), your options are a little limited. If you choose to book a few nights at the hut, you’ll have access to…
September 25, 2016 Despite the heavy traffic, Garibaldi Lake is awesome. Whether you’re trying to impress your social media feed with your back-to-nature simplicity, or you’re wholeheartedly looking to get out for some fresh air, exercise, and solid views, a hike to Garibaldi Lake makes a lot of people happy. Trail users and park frequenters love the area. Have you ever seen someone along the trail not smiling? – I mean, after the 6km junction of course. Because before then, the switchbacks give little reason for anyone to…
Trip date: June 20, 2015 On the June solstice, one year ago, I summited Mt. Kilimanjaro. In the week leading up to my summit anniversary, I found myself flipping through pictures and re-reading my trip report. With mixed emotions, I have been quietly celebrating. Why the mixed emotions? Reflecting on the past year, I’m not sure I’ve done anything significant. While I have been on a number of amazing hikes, they have been a means to an end; I’m training to move faster and learning to move more…
Trip Date: March 21, 2015 Ryan and I recently decided to check out the High Falls creek trail in Squamish. This hike has been on my to-do list for a while now and I was stoked to get it done. Prior to hiking the High Falls creek trail, I had zero experience photographing waterfalls. On our way to Squamish, I thought to brush up on my waterfall photog skills and skimmed through a few sites online. I found this blog to be the most helpful: http://www.alexwisephotography.net/blog/2011/11/16/how-to-photograph-waterfalls-tutorial/ Along Squamish Valley road,…
After our recent failed attempt to Rohr Lake, Ryan and I decided we needed some spectacular views; we headed up Panorama Ridge in Garibaldi Provincial park this past weekend. There are a few route options to the ridge including: the Cheakamus Lake trailhead or the Rubble Creek parking lot. We started from the Rubble Creek parking lot and ascended the western ridge via the ‘old’ route (instead of the standard trail up the northern ridge on the eastern side). Rubble Creek to Taylor Meadows We had an early start at the…
