On June 14, 2014, I am setting out to hike to Mt. Kilimanjaro, also known as the “Roof of Africa”, with 20 type 1 diabetics from around the world.
Mt. Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Tanzania, the highest mountain in Africa, and the highest free-standing mountain in the world at 5,895 metres or 19,341 feet above sea level.
“For seven consecutive days our challenge is to trek the beautiful Marangu Trail to Gilman’s Point and watch dawn break, approaching the almighty Mount Kilimanjaro from the south. The trail will lead us through muddy rainforests, along rocky paths and over endless valleys. We will be exposed to a wide range of beautiful scenery including lava towers, glaciers and ice cliffs. Each night will be spent at a different campsite offering us the opportunity to wake up to a unique and stunning view every morning. This is a challenging trek at altitude, climbing one of the most impressive and well-known mountains in the world, a truly unforgettable challenge.”
Aside from an online group where we’ve had the opportunity to introduce ourselves, share tips and feedback, and keep up with training, the team will meet in Amsterdam for the first time. From Amsterdam, we will be flying to Tanzania and heading straight to base camp. We have our own personal reasons for taking on this challenge, but our most common goals are raising awareness of type 1 diabetes and funding research for prevention, management, and a cure. Please take a moment to check out my fundraising page and support us by making a donation directly to JDRF. Every dollar counts!
